Depending on the social level of your child, trick or treating can be a delight or a disaster. Over the years, I have learned to value trick or treating as a great time to establish personal skills and communication. Here are a few reasons why you want to go all in trick or treating this Halloween.
- High motivation- When candy and treats are at stake, most kids will give as much as they can to earn the prize.
- Repetition-It might not be perfect at the first house. It will get a little better at each house you visit. By the end of the night you will have some successes to celebrate.
- Targeted time to teach social skills- This is the night you can go visit many neighbors, ring many doorbells and work on communicating manners on others’ personal property.
- Communication required- Whether your child uses sign language, a picture system, an electronic device or words, a series of requesting and gratitude will be taking place as you visit each house.
- Incognito- I don’t know how many times I wanted to go into disguise, as one of kids had a meltdown in public. Need I say more.
Don’t get discouraged if trick or treating doesn’t start off smooth. Keep trying. With each house offer reminders of appropriate communication. Celebrate big each time your child gets it right. Go ahead, give them an immediate treat. Prepping with a social story and practice before going out can help get off to a good start. Many parents also let their children practice wearing their costume days leading up to Halloween to make sure there will not be any wardrobe malfunctions that could ruin the fun. Enjoy your night. Hope it is sweet!
